The coalition announced a landmark partnership with Wal-Mart to put in place practices to reduce the risk of illegal gun purchases. The coalition also unveiled a new television advertisement drawing attention to the bipartisan common ground that exists between all 3 presidential candidates when it comes to protecting Americans from crimes committed with illegal guns.

Wal-Mart Joins Coalition to Announce the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership
The coalition announced a landmark partnership with Wal-Mart - the nation's largest firearms retailer - at today's national summit in Washington, DC. This partnership includes a 10-point voluntary code that will help ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of prohibited buyers.

Florida Conference: 20 New Mayors and a New Coalition of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns Announced
March 3, 2008 - Mayors Against Illegal Guns convened in Florida to address issues including the economic costs of gun violence, the role of state legislatures, and the importance of community involvement in combating illegal gun crimes. The coalition also announced 20 new Florida members as well as a new coalition of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns.

Coalition Announces Regional Gun Data-Sharing Initiative
February 13, 2008 - Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon hosted 16 mayors and city representatives from 7 states at a regional violence reduction summit where the coalition announced plans to share crime gun data in the Mid-Atlantic region. At the conference, mayors discussed the escalating crime trends and the costs of gun violence and other strategies to reduce violent crime, including intelligence gathering.

Coalition Sends Questionnaire to Presidential Candidates
December 9 - The bi-partisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns today announced that it has sent a survey on the topic of illegal guns to all candidates for president of the United States. The survey is designed to elicit the views of presidential candidates on the issue of illegal guns to both better inform coalition mayors and to focus public attention on this vital issue of national concern.

Members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns Support Legislation to Close Terror Gap
US Conference of Mayors President Mayor Doug Palmer joined Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) to announce support from members of the coalition for legislation that will keep guns out of the hands of terrorists. The bill was introduced by Senator Lautenberg and Representative Peter King (R-NY) and allows the Department of Justice to prohibit anyone with suspected ties to terrorism from buying a gun.
